A Week in Writing #593 - Christmastime

Hope everyone is staying safe, and, of course, writing.

Christmas at my house is really great and very physical media heavy, including books, movies, video games and music. The biggest problem is getting to everything, but that is fodder for another day. But they will probably be sources for reviews on Trophy Unlocked sometime in the future.

Speaking of Trophy Unlocked, the holiday didn't stop reviews, including Paul's Game Day review of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (2011), which came out on Wednesday the 24th. My review of Blast of Silence was the Saturday Morning Review. I didn't think of it at the time, but the story of the movie takes place between Christmas and New Years, so it was an appropriate pick for the holiday week.

I aslo have written three reviews this past week, including two holiday specials It's Christmastime Again, Charlie Brown, and The Little Drummer Boy. The third one was Ninotchka from 1939, which was one of the movies we watched on "Movie Day", our post-Christmas day ritual. These will all come out some time in the future, so stay turned.

SRCC Press didn't stop either, as we launched Trevor's 10th issue of The Blade of Miracles on Christmas Eve. Titled, "Mordred, Part 3", the book is available in both print and digital through The Campus Store on our website.

Our new artist continued work on Powers Squared and didn't take the holiday off either, turning in several pages during the past week. I'm very happy with her and hope this will continue for a long while.

As far as my writing, I made some updates to previous books, Getting Even and The Runaway, while also working on Blackmail. For those following along, I'm now up to 73,207 words.

We actually pre-recorded this past week's podcast to take into account Movie Day. Recorded on the 16th, OAPS #331 - Kickstarter Unboxing - Pirates and Robots had us unboxing recent Kickstarter deliveries, including Pirates: A Graphic History (But not THAT kind of graphic) and Transformers, The Compendium Set.  You can still watch it on our twitch.tv channel, listen to it here or wait until the 31st at 2:30 pm PST and watch it here.

A Week in Writing #590 - New Artist and the Newsletter

Hope everyone is staying safe, and, of course, writing.

We're coming down to the end of the year and there's been a bit of good news. We've officially hired a new artist for Powers Squared and one who is turning in pages, yeah. Her name is Wendie Renard, and she's an artist I found on Instagram. I had looked at her work earlier, when we were beginning to really consider letting the old one go, due to lack of performance and communication. I had a lawyer friend redo our artist agreement and that became a time-consuming process, but he has since sent it to her and she's signed it. Hopefully, we'll be able to get back on a real schedule again with production of the book.

This was also newsletter week for Powers Squared, The Hound Dogs' Howl. If you didn't get yours, then you're not a subscriber. I make this pitch once a month with little hope that someone who reads this blog would also be interested in one of the main projects I'm involved with. That said, you're more than welcomed to sign up. Now that Christmas time is here, Trophy Unlocked will have more holiday-themed reviews, starting with my review of Larceny, Inc. (1942). But that's not the only review on the blog this week. On Wednesday, Game Day, was Paul's review of Sonic Heroes. And we're also staying current with what's in the theaters with Trevor's review of Zootopia 2 which came out today. And soon, there will be Paul's review of Five Nights at Freddy's 2, a film we watched on Saturday. No new review from me this week, though; it happens.

In keeping with the holiday theme, our podcast, On the Air with Powers Squared, was about the four animated specials of Prep and Landing. 'tis the season as they say. Not much work on Blackmail this week, I'm afraid. I did work a little on it, but not enough to brag about. I'm up to 68,764, which is pretty close to what I was at last week, so enough said about that.

A Week in Writing #589 - Happy Holidays

Hope everyone is staying safe, and, of course, writing.

I'm hoping everyone had a safe and happy Thanksgiving. Mine was good, up on Thanksgiving to San Mateo and back the next day. It's a lot of driving let me tell you, which is not my favorite way to spend the day.

Not much Black Friday shopping, save for our annual trip to Barnes & Noble; we go other times, too, but always on Black Friday. Black Friday isn't what it used to be, which is both good and bad. I miss the hubbub but at the same time, I don't. But now it's like Black Friday Month, so the actual day means nothing.

I'm happy to report that despite a shorter week, I managed to write more on Blackmail than I have in a long while. I'm now up to 68,432, so we're getting closer; 80,000 is my goal.

We recorded what might be our shortest podcast ever on Wednesday and were back in time to post it on Friday. In OAPS #327 - Powers Squared State of Play 2025, we discuss the current status of Powers Squared, which is missing an artist. Speaking of the artist, our lawyer sent her the contract he drafted on Thanksgiving Day, but haven't heard anything back. Hopefully, soon we'll be able to announce the hire and we can get back to producing the book.

Wednesday was a busy one for us, as the 9th issue of The Blade of Miracles, Trevor's comic book series, came out on that day. This is "Mordred, Part 2" and in this issue, "The final battle begins!" The issue, like all of the series, is available in print and digital through The Campus Store on our website.

The holiday didn't stop Trophy Unlocked. On Wednesday, Game Day, Paul's review of Dispatch, a recent PC game, went up. My review of Armored Car Robbery was the Saturday Morning Review, as well as the last of our Noirvember reviews. Not really working on a new one. Finally finished the Batman serial review, but I haven't yet started Heroes For Sale. We did see Zootopia 2 earlier today, but I'll let someone else review that one.

This week, it's truly newsletter time, so I'll be working on this. I hope to be working on Blackmail, and I might be looking back at some other books, since I've hit on the description of one of the main characters and would like to make sure it's the same one when she's described.

A Week in Writing #588 - Blame it on the Contract

Hope everyone is staying safe, and, of course, writing.

This week was mostly spent in reviewing an artist contract for our "new" artist. There was some back and forth with the lawyer and I wanted to make sure everyone on our side was happy with it. You might not think it would be that big of a deal, but it does take time. It started when I wanted to be sure the new contract took into account AI and the lawyer went on from there. At this point, it's close and I want this to be over, so we can get the artist working.

In other Powers Squared  news, we were notified on Friday that we're waitlisted for San Diego Comic-Con 2026. Hopefully, we'll get in and get more than three weeks of a heads-up.

We also shot our podcast a day early, so that took Thursday night away as well. The podcast was to provide Trevor with the chance to preview the new issue of his book, The Blade of Miracles, "Mordred, Part 2." The 9th issue drops on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving and will be available in both print and digital at The Campus Store on our website.

Because we pre-recorded the podcast, the easiest thing would be to stream the recording on time, but I managed to mess that up, so it went out about 15 minutes late. My review of The Big Steal went up on Trophy Unlocked as part of our celebration of Noirvember. Paul's review of Shantae Advance: Risky Revolution  for the Game Boy Advance went up as the Wednesday Game Day review. Trevor's review of Thus Spoke Kishibe Rohan: At a Confessional went up this morning. This was a film that we watched on Friday night. We did watch a movie on Saturday night, The Lost World (1925), but since most of us fell asleep during it, I don't think I'll be reviewing it. I'm still working on The Batman serial and Heroes for Sale, so I've got my hands full at the moment.

The way the week went meant I didn't get much of a chance to work on Blackmail this week, so we're standing still at 66,618 words.

As I'm sure everyone is aware, this next week includes the Thanksgiving Day holiday, which means there will probably be no writing on either Thursday or Friday. I aslo realize that sooner than later, I'll have to work on the next newsletter but luckily the first Sunday of December isn't until the 7th. So, I'm going to apologize now if my output isn't up to expectations for the next few weeks, though I want to get going again with Blackmail.

A Week in Writing #587 - Getting Nowhere Fast

Hope everyone is staying safe, and, of course, writing.

I wish I could say we've finalized the deal with the artist, but we're all but there. I had asked the lawyer who drafted the original agreement we use to review it to see if there needs to be any updates (No AI, etc.). Since it's a favor, I can't get too mad, but the artist is chomping at the bit to get started and I'm anxiously waiting, too.

We had a second conversation with James Silvani, a comic book artist and the creator of Pirates: A Graphic History (But not THAT kind of graphic), which had a successful Kickstarter last year. My sons had run into him at Comic-Con and he said he was interested in appearing again, which is always nice to hear. On Trophy Unlocked, we continued Noirvember with my Saturday Morning review of I Wake Up Screaming. On Wednesday, Game Day, was Trevor's review of Once Upon a Katamari. I'm working on my review of The Batman serial, which is going to be long; and Heroes For Sale (1933).

I'm finding, and I'm not sure it's all blameable on Daylight Savings Time, but I'm getting to things later in the evening and thus have less time to go from being productive to being a half-awake zombie at a laptop. Part of it has been dealing with our prospective artist and sending things to them, but work seems to go on longer and that makes everything get pushed back. Also, we shot our podcast on Thursday night, rather than Friday, and had some retakes we had to do because of audio issues, but that sort of took up two nights, the first being getting ready for it after the guest confirmed two nights before at 11:30 pm.

As a result, my output on Blackmail wasn't what I wanted it to be. I started a new chapter but I'm not happy with the results but let's count the words for 66,618, which I don't think really moves the needle much.

I'll try to do better this week, but it's a pledge, not a promise.

A Week in Writing #583 - The Time Had Come

Hope everyone is staying safe, and, of course, writing.

Well, things finally came to a head this week and I fired the artist on Powers Squared. It was not something I wanted to do, but after two months and no finished pages and two weeks and no response to a direct message, I didn't feel like I had a choice. It was time to move on. We're in the process of looking for a new artist and hopefully we'll find one soon. There have, so far, been only four artists to draw the book, which isn't bad for 28 issues. One drew five, another drew four, this last one did only one and one aritst drew 18 issues in all.

On this week's podcast, Paul and I discussed horror movies, in time for Halloween. I figured if we did it on Halloween it would be too late. For me, watching horror films after Halloween is a little like watching Christmas movies in January; the season has passed. Speaking of horror films, or more like Gothic Science Fiction, we attended a screening of Guillermo del Toro's Frankenstein this past Saturday. I was anxious to see it because I had read the Mary Shelley novel and had high hopes del Toro's version would be a closer adaptation to the book than Universal's Frankenstein (1931) had been. My review will go up next Saturday, so you'll have to wait until then to know how I feel about the new movie.

In the meantime, Paul's review of Tron: Ares went up on Saturday on Trophy Unlocked. And on Game Day Wednesday, Trevor's review of the PC game Tron: Catalyst was featured.

I also did some prelimary research on the Batman serial we're watching, though we didn't watch any this past Saturday.

More work on Blackmail this week, but more like editing, though I did add a chapter. The word count is now 61,671, so some movement forward on that. This Tuesday past was my wife's birthday, so I took the day off. Since it was raining, we sheltered in place for half the day and I was able to get some work done on the book.

No new queries this week. I've got to get back on that horse soon.

The next week, we'll keep working on finding a new artist and I hope to get in more writing on Blackmail.

A Week in Writing #535 - Deleting Twitter and Not Looking Back

Hope everyone is staying safe, and, of course, writing.

This week, not only had I moved our accounts to BlueSky, but we also deleted our Twitter account. Again, concerns over AI is the main reason. It's slow going rebuilding a following on a new platform, but it's a decision we made and I'll stand by going forward. On the subject of Powers Squared, I'm happy to report that our new artist, Jen Moreno, turned in 8 really good looking pages for Issue #28. I hope we're in good hands going forward.

Our two former artists, Julia Canon and Rachel Wells, joined Trevor, Paul and myself for our 16th Comic Book Club, wherein we discussed Happy Kanako's Killer Life, Volume 1 by Toshiya Wakabayashi. After that we recorded, for the future, a preview of Issue #23, "Family Affair, Part 2". That podcast will come out on Black Friday, and the new issue will be released on Wednesday, Dec. 4. You'll have to wait to see that one, but you can listen to the Book Club here or watch it on our YouTube channel on Wednesday after 2:30 pm PST here.

While I enjoy doing podcasts with the creative team, I'm at least twice as old as any of them and sometimes feel like Roy from the old The Mickey Mouse Club, which was before my time. All the young mouseketters would introduce themselves, then this older man would come out; Roy. You know he had less than nothing in common with Annette Funicello. Again, this was all before my time, but I've seen videos from that era. I don't have the same points of references the others have and they, for the most part, don't have mine either. And, to be honest, no one tries to make me feel that way, it's just how I feel sometimes.

I finished going through my rewrites on Skylar, so now it's down to the denouement, which I started to work on too late to make any real progress on it. I know how the book will end, but it's the getting there that I'm working on.

On to the subject of Trophy Unlocked. My review of Bombshell (1933) was the Saturday Morning Review. I picked that one to go up because last week was the anniversary of the release of Jean Harlow's first big starring role, Hell's Angels (1930) and she was on my mind. I'm still amazed about the impression she made in such a short time. Earlier in the week, Trevor's review of Sheepy: A Short Adventure went up on Wednesday, what I like to hashtag as GameDay.

I'm currently working on a review of Blade, which we watched on Friday night. I won't give anything away, but I drew the short straw.

I've already started working on the next newsletter, as it's due the Sunday we get back from the Thanksgiving holiday, but more on that next week. So, I'll be working on that some more next week and finishing up Blade and hopefully the second draft of Skylar. There's also some finishing touches to be put on the next release, like loading it on a couple of platforms.

A Week in Writing #511 - A Bit of a Surprise

Hope everyone is staying safe, and, of course writing.

A bit of a surprise this week. The artist on Powers Squared, Julia Canon, has stepped down. The current issue that she's been working on, #27 "Billy and Raven", will be her last as the artist. This came during a Discord call that was initiated by me because she was not only way behind on pages but was being unresponsive, which are two things I hate. My plan was to read her the riot act and instead, before we can launch into anything, she resigned. She'll still finish the issue, which, again, is now behind schedule, but we're now looking for a replacement.

There are currently two streams of search. We've reached out to our former artist, Rachel Wells, to see if she knows of someone; she is a SCAD grad. And our current colorist, Jen Moreno, has already made it clear that she'd like to be considered for the spot. She's never done a book before, but from what I've seen, she's talented as an illustrator; it's another thing to do sequential storytelling. We'll probably want to do a test with all the potentials to see if their style is a good mix for us.

Julia's not going anywhere and will still be a part of the podcasts, etc. going forward, but it remains to be seen if she'll return to being the colorist or not.

This was newsletter week and that did get off this morning, when it was due. We've opted for the first Sunday of the month, as it gives us an opportunity to look back at the previous month and doesn't overwhelm. We tried a weekly newsletter, but were advised that was overkill, not to mention hard on me/us.

Our celebration of all things Transformers came to an end on Friday, when we played our interview with Marty Isenberg, who had been a writer on several Transformers-themed shows. While we usually go live on Fridays, we pre-recorded this interview back in April, when he was available. It also gave us some flexibility having one in the back pocket, so to speak. It's available to listen to here and can be watched after Wednesday, the 5th, here. There is also a playlist of all the TF40 podcasts, if anyone is interested.

For Trophy Unlocked, my review of The Guardsman (1931) was the Saturday Morning Review. This one dates back to 2021, but at least it's seen the light of day. I'm still working on three, having finished The Little Shop of Horrors, I'm also working on one for Pushover.  As part of our drain the DVR Saturday nights, I picked this one, since I had recorded it twice to view; it seemed like the time to get to it.

I've worked on Skylar as often as possible during the week. I've got a new chapter to write, as the plot has been evolving, so I'm looking forward to that.

Queries have not made their way back into the grind. I just don't have the time to get to it. One more thing to add the pile that's already too high.

A Week in Writing #438 - New Year Old Routines

Hope everyone is staying safe, and, of course, writing.

Starting over with the new year is sometimes harder than you think it will. I don't know about you but going back to the full time gig is more tiring than you might think it will be. It's sort of like using muscles that you haven't in awhile.

It also means I'm back to trying to squeeze in whatever writing I'm trying to do in a couple of hours every night. So, back to the old routine as it were.

Routines for the most part are good when it comes to writing but at the same time, they are very limiting. And getting back to them is sometimes hard. All this as a prelude to explaining my output for the week.

I do want to say I worked on aka Skylar but like last week, I'm sort of going through and making changes to what I've already written so far and not making progress on completing the story. So, if you're keeping track at home, I'm up to 57,652 words with at least another 30,000, I'm guesing, to go.

For Trophy Unlocked, I completed a new review, this time for Three Strangers, a 1946 film noir crime drama starring Sydney Greenstreet, Geraldine Fitzgerald, and Peter Lorre. As always, this was a film I had seen playing on TCM and decided to record and was part of our Saturday night DVR cleaning; see it's all routine. And, as always, I don't know when it will see the light of day.

The Saturday Morning Review this week was Paul's for Weathering With You, a 2019 animated film from Makoto Shinkai, the same director behind Your Name (2017). This film was one we watched on Movie Day, which in my family is the day after Christmas. The British have Boxing Day, in my house we have Movie Day.

On the topic of Powers Squared, and you knew we were getting here, we agreed on the premise, so now it's on to the outline.

We had our new artist, Julia Canon on our podcast On the Air with Powers Squared. With all of the other changes going on this year with the book, it's nice to have her stay with us. It's a bit of continuity, even though there will be differences in her style versus Rachel Wells' had been.

Based on this idea, the peek-of-the-week is a comparison between the three artists we've had, Sika Murti, Rachel and Julia, and their character designs for the main characters. This week it's Marty.

I also made some changes with the website and the merchandise. We decided to take down some of the t-shirts and make available ones with the new logo on them. If curious, you can check out The Campus Store.

I had a bit of hiccup with my usual routine, since we're on that topic. On Sunday mornings, I post the peek-of-the-week and upload the OAPS video on YouTube. And then, I do some future social media posts for Facebook, Instagram and Twitter using Go Daddy, the platform the website resides on. Only today, the links with Facebook and Instagram didn't work and I couldn't reconnect them. After spending about an hour on it, I finally found out it's more system wide than just me. When you only have so much time, spending it chatting with a service rep is not the best use of it. And, now I have to go back and redo them later this week, yay!
